A science fiction novella by P.A. Cornell
Listed as one of 2022's best novellas in Year's Best Canadian Fantasy & Science Fiction, Vol. 1
An important announcement regarding Lost Cargo:
Since 2022, Lost Cargo has been published through Mocha Memoirs Press, an indie publisher that aims to highlight the work of underrepresented and marginalized authors, many of whom are award winners and finalists. (Check out the great work they’re doing here)
I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the great people at MMP, and sincerely thank them for believing in my book and helping me bring it to readers in the form I hoped for. The book has been consistently well-received by readers and was even listed among the best novellas of 2022 in Year’s Best Canadian Fantasy & Science Fiction, Vol. 1, which pleases me to no end.
This all said, there are many avenues through which authors can make their stories available to readers and it was therefore mutually agreed upon from the start that my partnership with MMP would be limited to two years. That agreement comes to a close on September 12, at which point Lost Cargo will go—at least temporarily—out of print.
With that in mind, I wanted to give the many readers who have added Lost Cargo to their TBR lists a heads up to give them an opportunity to buy a copy of the book before it’s gone. Below you’ll find links to the several places from which you can buy this book, including the Mocha Memoirs Press website.
If you’re new to my fiction, I’m a Latine author based in Canada who writes science fiction, fantasy and horror. Lost Cargo is science fiction that includes some darker elements (see the back cover blurb below). My fiction has been published, or is forthcoming, in over fifty magazines and anthologies, including some of the top publications in the field. It’s also been included in three “Best of” anthologies, most recently, The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2024. I’ve been a finalist for the Nebula, Aurora, and World Fantasy awards, was longlisted for the 2023 BSFA Awards, and won Canada’s 2022 Short Works Prize.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has read, reviewed, and otherwise helped spread the word about Lost Cargo over the past two years. Your kind words about this story have touched me more than I’m able to convey. I hope this book will again find readers in a future to come, but until then, I’m grateful to all those it has already found, especially those of you who in some way let me know you enjoyed it. It’s been a privilege to share this story with you.

Mocha Memoirs Press (Print) Amazon (Print & eBook) Barnes & Noble (Print & eBook) IndieBound (Print) Indigo (eBook) iTunes (eBook) Scribd (eBook) When Parker signed up for the new colony world, they said the journey would be easy; just a nice, long stasis nap, followed by a smooth descent in the landing pods. But when an asteroid impact damages their pod, Parker and her fellow passengers are prematurely launched and left stranded on a wild, uninhabited moon – the remnant of a failed terraforming experiment.
With no way to call for help, the group must race against a rapidly-closing window of time to reach an abandoned camp before their slim chance at rescue is gone forever. This journey will be far from easy as the dangers of this alien landscape reveal themselves at every turn, and without a map, the only one who can lead them through it is Parker – but she has her own priorities, and survival may not be one of them. |
